hipages, How much does a plumber cost, updated 24 July 2026. Ranges, not quotes.

Emergencies and after hours
Call-out fees and rates are higher evenings, weekends and public holidays. For a non-urgent job that can safely wait, compare a business-hours booking. An active gas, electrical or sewage hazard needs the appropriate urgent response; do not delay it to pursue a lower price.
Keeping the bill down
- Ask for the call-out fee and hourly rate, or a fixed price, before work starts.
- Batch small jobs into one visit.
- Ask to see the plumber's licence card: every licensed or registered plumber in Victoria carries photo ID listing the work they may do.
- For work of $750 or more, ask for the compliance certificate.
What the published prices include
The figures above come from a national consumer cost guide, rather than a survey of quotes collected by this publication. Its Melbourne hourly range describes one part of a possible bill. It does not establish the price for your address, the availability of a particular practitioner or the final amount for a job that has not been inspected.
For example, a water heater replacement can include the appliance, delivery, removal of the old unit, plumbing alterations and electrical work. A straightforward replacement and a change of system or location can have very different scopes. Read the hot water replacement cost guide before treating the published range as an installed price for every type of system.
The same caution applies to a blocked drain. Clearing an accessible obstruction differs from locating a damaged pipe, excavating, replacing a section and reinstating a surface. A low advertised starting price cannot tell you which of those tasks the property needs. Ask what the quoted work will establish and which further work requires a separate decision.
Call-out fees, minimum charges and hourly billing
A call-out fee might cover attendance alone, attendance with an initial assessment, or a stated amount of labour. There is no reason to assume all businesses use the term in the same way. Before booking, ask what is included, whether any included time starts on arrival, and whether the fee remains payable if you decline further work.
An hourly rate also needs a billing basis. Ask whether the business has a minimum charge, how additional time is rounded and whether travel or obtaining parts is charged separately. If two people need to attend, establish whether the rate is for the team or for each person. These questions make two offers comparable without assuming the lowest headline rate produces the lowest invoice.
Ask whether quoted amounts include GST and any applicable payment surcharge. Obtain the terms in writing where practical. A message confirming the attendance fee, included assessment and requirement for approval before additional work is more useful than relying on a remembered telephone figure.
A worked comparison with fictional amounts
Suppose one fictional offer is $120 for attendance, including the first 30 minutes, followed by $40 for each additional 15 minutes. Another fictional offer is $80 attendance plus $120 an hour, with a one-hour labour minimum. If the agreed task takes 30 minutes and neither offer has other charges, the first totals $120 and the second totals $200.
That arithmetic is an illustration of billing structures, not a Melbourne quote or evidence that either price is available. Parts, GST treatment and the scope would still need to match before comparing actual offers. A different duration or minimum could change the result. Write down the total under the conditions relevant to your job rather than comparing $120 and $80 in isolation.
Fixed quotes and uncertain work
A fixed quote is most useful when it names the work and the assumptions behind the price. For a tap repair, those might include the fitting involved and whether replacement parts are included. For a drain repair, the quote should identify the affected section, access, disposal and reinstatement. Ask what happens if inspection reveals a different problem.
An estimate for uncertain work should explain the uncertainty. A practitioner may need to inspect a concealed leak before defining a repair. It can be reasonable to agree to a limited diagnostic stage first, then consider a separate repair quote. Establish the cost and limit of that first stage, what findings you will receive and whether temporary containment is included.
Do not give open-ended approval simply because a job has started. Agree how the business will seek approval for additional work and what it will do if you cannot be reached. If a proposed variation changes the price, obtain its scope and amount before authorising it where circumstances allow. Immediate safety work and a permanent repair may need separate explanations.
Information that helps a plumber quote
Describe what you can observe safely: where the symptom occurs, when it started, whether one fixture or several are affected, and whether the problem is ongoing or intermittent. For hot water, an accessible model label or existing appliance record can help. Do not remove covers or approach electrical equipment in water to obtain it.
Tell the business about access restrictions, apartment or owners-corporation arrangements, parking limitations and known buried services relevant to the proposed work. Photos can clarify a visible fitting or the location of water, but they do not replace an inspection or establish the cause of a concealed fault.
If the household rents, clarify who is arranging and authorising the work through the applicable rental process. In an apartment, check whether the affected service is private or shared before approving a permanent alteration. Responsibility can change the person who needs to approve a quote; it does not make an immediate hazard safe to ignore.
Emergency bookings
Explain the symptom when asking for urgent attendance. A complete loss of the only toilet, sewage entering the home, a substantial active leak and a minor dripping tap can require different responses. An appropriate practitioner or utility can help assess the immediate situation; a price article cannot diagnose urgency remotely.
Ask for the after-hours attendance charge and what initial work it covers. If the immediate objective is to make the situation safe, ask what that involves and whether a permanent repair will be quoted separately. Obtain an itemised record of both stages if both occur. A temporary measure should come with clear instructions about its limitations and the next step.
The July 2026 hipages guide gives higher emergency figures than its ordinary hourly examples. Those are guide estimates, not a maximum fee or a guarantee of availability. Where a gas, electrical or sewage hazard is present, follow the relevant emergency guidance rather than delaying necessary action while comparing routine appointments.
Qualifications, certificates and the final invoice
Check that the person doing the work is appropriately licensed or registered for its class. Ask who will supervise or certify work where applicable. A familiar business name or an online advertisement does not, by itself, establish the qualifications of the person attending.
Victorian compliance-certificate requirements depend on the work and its total value, including relevant labour, materials and appliances. The $750 threshold is inclusive; some specified work requires a certificate below it. The compliance-certificate guide explains those distinctions. Ask about the actual scope rather than assuming every attendance produces the same document.
At completion, compare the invoice with the accepted scope and any approved variations. Keep the description of work, parts or appliance details, payment record and relevant certificates. If an item is unclear, ask the business to explain it against the agreement. These records also help the next practitioner understand what was repaired if a related symptom returns.
Booking several small jobs together
For non-urgent work, one visit may reduce repeated attendance charges, but ask the business to price the proposed list. A washer replacement, a running toilet and a pressure complaint can need different parts or investigations. Grouping them is useful when the practitioner can plan the visit; it is not a reason to assume every item fits within one minimum charge.
Give the complete list when booking and identify the priority if time is limited. Keep routine maintenance separate from a fault that is worsening or unsafe. After the visit, retain a short record of which items were completed, which need parts and which require a further quote, so an unfinished item is not mistaken for a completed repair.
